I would love you more than you can imagine.
Conrad needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping him get a new start?
Conrad was picked up by animal control in a rural area of North Texas. He's young, playful, and affectionate, so it's hard to understand why anyone would dump him, or not come to the shelter to claim him. And yet his story is all too common in Texas and across much of the southern USA.
Our best guess is that Conrad is an Akbash dog, possibly mixed with Great Pyrenees. He came to us with entropion affecting one eye, and our vet did the delicate surgery to repair that problem. (Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes and surrounding hair to rub against the dog's sensitive cornea.) In photos before the surgery, you'll see the tear stains that are one of the tell-tale signs of this problem. In photos taken shortly after surgery, his eye still looks irritated, but that's because of the area that was shaved in preparation for surgery. His eye is healed now, and looking much better, so we need to make a point to get some updated photos!
We have started testing Conrad with our livestock, but it's too early to say whether this handsome boy is going to have the right stuff to be a working livestock guardian dog. He is so very friendly and affectionate that we know he would make a wonderful companion/family dog. But we'll update this bio once we have a better idea whether he might be happy living on a small homestead protecting goats, or whether he needs to be a house dog/pet. Stay tuned!
